THE CARDINAL VAUGHAN MEMORIAL SCHOOL

Founded in 1914, The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School is a national memorial to the 3rd Archbishop of Westminster, Herbert Cardinal Vaughan (1892-1903). This Roman Catholic secondary school in Holland Park has a considerable reputation for academic success; it appears at the top end of the exam league tables year after year, and is widely considered to be in the top ten state schools nationally. Examination results at every level go far beyond local and national averages. Much emphasis is placed on high standards of behaviour, hard work, good manners and respect for authority. Nearly all the pupils go on to university, each year a substantial number winning places at Oxford and Cambridge.

The School’s musical tradition is a source of constant pride. Apart from the Schola Cantorum there are three choirs. Instrumental music is also very strong, with one in four pupils receiving instrumental tuition. There are many ensembles, including a symphony orchestra and a Big Band which play to a high standard.

Above all else, the Vaughan is committed to the mission of the Catholic Church, with prayer and worship central to the life of the School. Essentially, the School aims, through its Catholic ethos and sound Catholic teaching, to prepare its pupils to undertake their responsibilities as Catholics in society. In all that it does, the School seeks

the formation of the whole man;
his intellect, his heart, his will,
his character and his soul.

[Henry Cardinal Manning (1808-1892), 2nd Archbishop of Westminster]
